I have no intent on cheating the system, but is anyone familiar with worker disability as it relates to panic disorder? Should my condition escalate to a point where it keeps me from working, I want to know my family won't starve.

Hi Vince,
That is a very good question and I have been wondering the same thing myself. I returned to work this week after being off for a while. So far its not going so well for me. I wasn't sure what to do. I thought maybe it would be helpful for me to get back out into the world and get my mind off the panic but apparently that is not the case. I am in a position where I have to have income. It is **** near impossible to focus on my work and get anything done while i'm feeling like i'm having a heart attack, smothering, and shaking uncontrollably. I dont want to depend on disability for the rest of my life. I certainly hope that a day will come when I am free of this disorder and I can lead a normal life. What are we supposed to do in the meantime though? I am going back to my doctor on the 18th of this month and I plan on discussing the possibility of disability with him. I will let you know what I find out.
  Good Luck to You,
  Samantha

As far as I know, most serious mental disorders qualify for 2 years of disability....if the mental disorder is secondary to a primary physical - ie heart disease, etc....it can be indefinite. From what I heard, Panic is definitely recognized as a disabling condition and people often get disability but after several attempts but this is all based on a few stories I have heard. In the end, I realize that its everyones last resort....for me, no matter how bad it gets....working seems to be a better option than disability because it seems to distract me to some extent and leaves me feeling somewhat part of society....also, we need to be in positions that are "kind" to our disability...ie for me, jobs with lots of travel(actually, any travel these days) would not be an option......This is not to say that I may not chose the disability route one day.....you never know the twists and turns this illness takes. Be good to yourself foremost!
