The title says it all.  I feel like I've been entered in
"survivor" against my will.  At the end of August I
HAVE to go on a four hour drive to Temagami and
spend seven days on an Island with my partner,
his brother, wife, some of their friends and a
whole slew of kids--at least four of mine!

Trouble is, I only manage a two hour trip up North
by getting completely zonked out.  I also haven't
been on a boat in years and there is no other way
to this place.

When I'm my "normal" self, the trip would seem
like paradise--the wilderness, the water, friends
and family....but right now all I can think is isolation,
travel horror and seven days of hell; not to mention
the 5 weeks of hell worrying about it.

Any ideas?  I'm trying to "challenge" my thoughts,
but I'm not having much success.

Hey, I've got a similar thingie.
Leaving tomorrow to a place ~five hours away to a friend's cottage, returning on tuesday (that's three days only).
Me and my GF are taking the train, as five hours in a small car with four people would be...well, hell.
Sucks, because we'll be riding home in the car - but I find the returningtrips to be alot easier, as you're coming home instead of going to some freaky place. :P

I'm guessing I can have some fun with the hellish trip, instead of fearing only the negative sides of it. Every trip makes us stronger, as we collect more of those "I've done this before" - experiences to look back at in future situations, right?
After all, we've done it before and survived (even had some fun most of the times!), so why wouldn't we survive this one?

You'll be fine - and just go to a private place for a while if you get anxious, every place has one!

Oh, and I hate boats too (among other vehicles you can't really get out of) - had to ride in one for a long time one summer. I was really nervous before and to start with, but calmed down as I talked and laughed with some friends. I think they key's really to just face the fact that you are in that situation and it won't change by you panicking about it. Breathe slowly, ignore the heartbeat, and socialize as much as you can. :D

*stops the random writing now* ^___^

Same with me. Monday morning at 4am I have to fly to Indiana, pick up a custom-fitted van for my business, then drive it back home to DC in time for work on Tuesday afternoon. Now if that doesn't get one's nerve gangleas in an uproar, I'd hate to see what does!
I'll be thinking about you, Lauralai, and drawing from your strength as well as the others here. Feel free to draw on my positive thoughts to you as well.

Just an update on my behalf;

The trip went well, the train ride was a bit anxious at first - but I managed to relax myself, even take a nap on the train! Looking back, the train ride was really fun.
The time at the location went pretty well, had to take half a sleeping pill one night - but otherwise it was fun and I was fairly relaxed most of the time.
The car ride home went VERY well, I even drove over half the time!

Feels good to have another "Oh no...I'm going to die"-situation turn into a "Well, it wasn't that bad after all"-memory. These are the memories that make us stronger in the future.

Thanks for the encouragement and positive thoughts.  I've
been so terrified, I've even looked into being checked into a
nursing home for the week....

Anyways, I've decided to go.  In my heart of hearts, I know I'll
wind up having fun.  If I don't go, I'll simply spend seven days
worrying about my four year old son who has Leukemia, and
needs chemo every day.  Daddy's good, but still isn't too sure
about the chemo, as it's kind of complicated.

Your success sounds so like so many things i go through.
"What doesn't kill us makes us stronger".  At this point, I may,
in fact, be the strongest woman on the planet,  Wink  soooo....Off
to Temagami and may God be with me...and the rest of us!

Hi everyone!

I survived the trip to Temagami, and even had some fun
while up there.  The worst parts were the ride there and back,
and the boat to the island.  For the most part though, I had
fun.  I even went for a few rides in a small motor boat, and the
last night my partner and I had a romantic paddle in a
paddleboat under the moon.

To be honest the absolute worst part was the weeks and
weeks I wasted fretting and worrying about the trip. Smile

Now I have a new worry--what will I do when the kids go to
school and I'm alone during the day.....it never ends does it.
If there were an Olympic medal for worrying, I'd take the Gold!

Hats off to you---Just read about your successful trip.  I would have chosen not to go, maybe someday I will have the courage.  I am trying to muster up the courage to take a 2 hour trip to see my sister.

Good for you, I love to hear success stories.
