Hi all,  I am new to the site and was reading your posts and thought I would ask if any of you knew of some good books or CD's on meditation.  Or if any of you have any good ideas for meditating.  I do try often to breath from my stomach instead of my chest but I would like to add more "meditation" practice to my routine.  I, however, cannot do YOGA because I am severly overweight and find it hard to move in the ways they require.  I have also tried some meditation/self help books but most of them make me feel uncomfortable and "quirky".  I don't really see how talking to myself and listening to a cd with "supposed" hidden hypnosis is helping me.  Any ideas?  I would GREATLY appreciate it.  Also any ideas on self help for severe depression would be great too!  Thanks for listening and good luck to all!

Melissa

I know one of the big parts of the panic program is exercising everyday.  That might help you.  And if you are sitting and trying to practice deep breathing and medication generally when you exhale for twice as long as you inhale that will bring you to a calmer, more relaxed state.  It was a big part of what I did when I was in martial arts and that's what they taught us there.

I bought some meditation tapes at the bookstore (Barnes and Noble). The tape has one side for when you wake up and one side for going to sleep by. I have never heard the end of the night time side! Smile  It is a guided meditation/hypnosis kind of thing with a soft calming voice directing you through all the motions and thoughts. It really makes getting into the relaxation mode much easier.

I suggest wearing headphones so that the normal sounds of the house do not intrude. Clocks ticking, air condtioners coming on and such can be somewhat disruptive.

The one I use most is called "Relieving stress and anxiety". It has two tapes included, the second tape is nature sounds and soft new age music. The best thing about these tapes with headphones is that I can use them while laying in bed and not disturb my spouse.

Good luck to you.

You could try this. It's software and creates all types of different ambient audio such as surf, ocean, crickets etc. It's a good alternative to purchasing many natural sound CD's.
