Hello everyone. I am ok today. What I wanted to ask everyone was this, I was told ages ago that to help cut down panic attacks one should only drink decaffinated drinks, I did and my attacks halved, the only thing is it takes about a week to come off of it, and in that week you will experience a realy heavy headache, after that you are ok, but if you have a decaffinated drink you could get an headache for about four days. I only drink decaffinatd drinks now, and although I still have panic attacks they are not as bad as before though I still get a bad one now and then. Has anyone else tried this or been recommended it?

when I was first diagnosed there were a few things I was told and number
1. was eliminate all caffeine from your diet (this includes chocolate).

2. EXERCISE

3. Don't take certain homepathic drugs they actually will induce anxiety instead of helping it.

If you are on any benzos don't take any....(kava and st john's) mix with the benzo's making them doubly strong.

Ginseng actually brings on anxiety.

That was the one I was on that did it. Also alot of the new "diet" pills that are all natural have the drugs that increase metabolism....these will increase your anxiety too just like caffeine

Another thing that has caffeine that ppl forget about it some pain relievers like excedrin.

Here is a great way to check out which herbs interact with your meds.  It is at GNC's website and is located under their Healthnotes section.  It is called Safety Checker.Safety Checker

It is really helpful!

yes, i have also read that cutting out the caffeine can be a good thing for relieving anxiety. I am down to one cup of coffee in the am and a few teas during the day...it's so hard to quit!  Smile

Hi Lemondrop,

I have also drastically cut back on caffeine and have noticed that it helps.  If I do have caffeine, I try to be active afterwards (to burn off that energy) rather than just sitting somewhere listening to my heart race   Wink
Another thing I do at work (I only have decaf at home) is fill half a mug with decaf and then top off with caffeine, so I can get a little bit of pep without the "side effects" of caffeine.
    Take care.

Thats a good idea Betty. Especially for someone who is a heavy coffee drinker and has to wean themselves of of the caffeine. Mix half and half for a while then slowly decrease the amount of decaffienated stuff.

How does caffeine contribute to panic attacks?

I get up at 3:30am to get ready for work.  I work eight hours then I
go to school.  I do not think I could make it with out my morning,
afternoon, and evening Mountain Dew.

as soon as my panic and axiety started creeping up again caffeine was the first thing i cut out.  i would drink ALOT of coffee throughout the day and to be zooming around doesnt help to calm panic so i stopped the caffeine and it definately helps me.   i have stopped and started caffeine a few times but i guess i am lucky becasue i dont get the headaches or side effect that others seem to have.  when i first started in real therapy for panic (about 12 years ago) that was one of the first things my doctor suggested and also if you are on meds to stay away from the naturals ( st. johns etc.).

Like Nick I cut out the coffee when I feel anxious.   On anxiety free days though, I find 1 or 2 cups of coffee do not increase my anxiety.  If anything, they seem to relax me although that's probably more  a result of the just sitting still for several minutes and dong nothing while I sip the coffee.  I think it is more the fear that the coffee will increase my anxiaty to panic attack levels than anything else that stops me drinking coffee when I'm having a bad day.

Please keep in mind that 5HTP is not to be mixed with most anti-anxiety drugs.  You can find out for sure by going to www.gnc.com, click on "Healthnotes" in the lefthand column and scroll down to use the "Safety Checker."

Yes, I have and so has my sister.  It seems to work pretty good.  I'd suggest building it up slowly like you do when you start a new med.
