Thank you for the tips-the whole big deal was because my daughter (16) sprung it on me that she needed me to drive her somewhere where I hadn't been before. I am currently driving familiar routes to places and doing so til it feels "hum drum"-I'm just not ready yet for the Suprise Drive.
But I like your mantra about being a good driver-every indication is that I am. I have never lost any points in driving, never caused an accident etc.etc. But I think you're right there is the whole "control'thing-the car, and everyone else on the road seems more powerful than me. I don;t want this thing to bet me-I want my life to be more expansive, not narrower. I guess the thing is that I haven't really been rewarding myself for achievements to date-too busy asking myself I am not doing more.
A appreciate the chat-it helps so much to know that others understand-I'll keep you posted. Wink

dear whisper,

i totally understand what you are saying about self talk, when i am anxious which at the moment is most of the time i totally self talk to my self, i tell myself that i am calm and peaceful, its only adrenalin, nothing will happen to me. i will get through this bad day i always do.  the thing is, its so draining, you get so tierd of it all,  i will be chatting to some one and they have no idea, i am all smiles and agreeing with whatever they are saying but in my head i am trying to calm myself down without this person realising whats going on, sometimes you just want to give in to it and run, its so very hard, i feel like i am 2 people, one saying you are fine and calm and the other telling me i am scared, run, you are going mad, youre shaking your heart is racing.  do you ever feel like that, i know my time will come when i can look back at this but when. when. when.
hope you feel better soon.
bye toni

Just wanted to share that I have had the best three days ever with my driving. Can't tell you exactely what caused the "shift"-lots of things probably. The self talk has been huge-changing it to "I can do this", "I am a competent driver" and even the bolder "I really enjoy driving and the freedom that it gives me". I literally spent hours anxious free driving over the weekend-remembering always that these are just steps, baby steps and that I don;t have to go any harder at it then I am already.
I found some of the tips really helpful, like keepin to the outside lanes (so that exiting is always an open option), NO MUSIC or radio (it really did make me feel more jangling, and the steadfast belief in the core of my being that this anxiety will pass and that I will drive again with confidence.
There are still a couple of bit challenges that I'm not ready to take on just yet-but I am thrilled with the development to date-and have rewarded myself accordingly.
Thanks for the help-will keep you posted
Wink

Miss Daisy, your post is a delight to read.  I love that you're rewarding yourself too.  Keep up the good stuff like you've been doing. Smile

I had a whopping pa last night around 11 pm, just dropped off to sleep and woke up and felt as if I was in a dream.  I tried all the self-talking, 'you're only having a panic attack, you won't die, just let the feelings come' and so on.  But I seemed to be stuck in this almost weird state of unreality.  Even my body did not seem to be my own.  I just cannot fathom it out, I had a good day no real worries, I felt happy etc.  I cannot seem to talk myself out of a panic attack and for a couple of hours afterwards, there was a left over feeling, my stomach churning, indigestion, feeling weird and out of it.  I cannot quite understand how these things work?  Does anyone get a strange feeling in the pit of their stomach when the attacks come on, it is almost like a cold wave going over me and then I get the palpitations, gasping for breath.  Thanks for any reply.

Hi Gerry,
I had been having a couple of good days recently with no panic attacks, but this weekend and today I feel awful. I seem to be in a constant panic attack. I feel very 'weird' as if something bad is going to happen.  I have just been for a walk with my 2 year old daughter to see if I could snap out of it, but now I feel worse than ever.  I have a problem with the 'self talk' as I cant convince myself that it is only a panic attack, even though I have had hundreds of them by now.  I try to fight them instead of accepting them.  I am so scared of the feelings. I wish we could all be rid of them.
If anyone has any advice?
Thanks
Ann

Dear Ann, I am having the same problem as You - i constantly try to fight my panic attacks instead of letting them just be. but today i was surprised at how i coped with my anxious thought. it wasn't a huge pa, just an anxious thought which was scary. i am using this lotion for my back ( i have an inflammation of the skin) and it can leave the skin very cold. my thought was: i must be dying from this lotion, i must be getting an allergic reaction to it. but i remembered how it had been before, when i had been using it and told myself: OK, i know how this med works, and i am not allergic to it, i have tried it before, and even if i am getting an allergic reaction, there's nothing i can stop this. and it somehow dispersed. mind you, this is my first day of thought challenging:)
i know it's hard, i am in a pretty bad shape with not being able to go out much alone, etc. (i'd say, i can only be very close home for now) but this program IS making slight improvements. don't wait for miracles! You can do whatever you want to.
and remember, i am here to talk if you want to ([email protected])
I hope this makes sense.
Iwona

Hi Ann and Iwona, guess we are all pretty much in the same boat!  I can't for the life of me get my anxious thoughts under control and when the panic attack comes they just keep crowding in on me.  I am getting less fearful of the panic attack symptoms but I just can't cope with the dread and fear that comes with it.  It's like something awful is about to happen.  I used to think I was dying with the heart palpitations, but that has gone now and I just think I am crazy for feeling this way.  I almost had one tonight in the supermarket, I had to fight to keep in under control. Like you Ann, I am having not a good day today.  Last night I had 4 panic attacks during the night, and I felt shattered this morning, I could not sleep.  I support teach children with special needs, so I need to be alert!  I hope we can all get over these feelings eventually.
