Hi, im new to the message board. I was just wondering if anyone has the feeling that they are on the verge of going crazy or they are slowly slipping into a point of no return. Feels more constant now even my panic atacks are worse!I dont know i guess cuz i feel like things are unreal like im in a dream and i cant snap out of it. Its sooo scary taht i even started doubting my faith (Catholic) does anyone go through this? Feelings of going nuts or any moment or slowly working up to that. Also feelings of unreality big time that everything feels like a dream, most of the time. Also anyone started questioning thier faith! I would love to hear some feedback. Thanks

Cioa Bella, I questioned my commitment to the Catholic church about 8 years ago (shoots it's been awhile) when I realized most religious have simular core concepts. For awhile I felt really guilty, almost embarrased, to feel so uncommited to one specufic practice. But somehow I couldn't justify my wholeness or spirituality by segregating myself to one specific group. I have felt to be in that dream state before. I think it just proves how the power of thought can really determine your future. I find myself self having to say "focus, focus, focus" just to follow through with out getting distracted.

At the beginning of my panic attacks the feelings of going crazy were really bad, until, I did a lot of reading that reassured me that panic attacks dont lead to going crazy or schizophrenia. I think that made me feel better and I have those thoughts less often now. If you dont mind me asking, what if any, medications are you on?

I used to get that a lot and I was also worried that I would lose my mind. (Huh) I don't think you know when you're going crazy though. It's my opinion from what I have read that you have no fear, you have no worries, you don't think things through when you are crazy or when your have lost your mind, and when you do care and when you do worry you know you're as sane as they come. It's because you're scared of what you're feeling and that's what makes you panic. Does that make any sense to you? I HOPE THIS HELPS:)

Hi.. I am completely empathize. This is my second time dealing with panic attacks. The first while i was in college 4 years ago. Now, i am living in Korea, alone, teaching english. They've just recently started again and well, it sucks. This time it's not the 'i think i am dying' thoughts but the 'i'm going crazy' phase. I've found that 'welcoming fear' and telling myself to let it happen because it can't hurt me often makes it never really come that bad. The one thing that does make it difficult though is the fact that my safety/security net is in Minnesota, my friends and family that is. No one but me this time to go through it.. It's a bit isolating. But what doesn't break me only makes me stronger right? ugh good luck emily

I'm a veteran i guess and I'm only 23! But like i said before, this is my second phase with PAs (the first being in college 4 years ago, briefly). Anyway, this time they aren't as bad because i am only in the 'going crazy' thought-process rather than the 'i'm dying and going crazy' mode. ANYWAY - the question i have is, DOES ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCE THIS ONLY WHEN THEY ARE ABOUT TO GO TO SLEEP?! I am fine most of the time but the minute my head hits the pillow, i am awake and the crazy thoughts start coming.. or just random, busy-ness of my head - it won't shut down and allow me to go to sleep!! anyone? emily :)

I think a lot of us feel this when we are going to sleep, for the most part it's the first time of the day when you aren't distracted by anything and your mind is free to wander, this is why I think this happens at bedtime, all the thoughts we were able to push out of our minds during the day because we busied ourselves with other things are there and we don't have anything distracting us from these thoughts.

I completely agree.. It's the time when our minds are 'free to think' and they stray to the bad things right away. More so than anything, it's annoying because i just want and need those 8 hours of sleep so i can get up, run, and teach the next day!! Like a frustrating kid brother that won't leave you alone... Gosh, it is too funny to read these messages because I feel like i am listening to myself! Well, before I got through my panic attcks (my story is a reply under "New Here") Anyway, the whole thing about questioning you religion totally happened to me. I now follow my own set of beliefs but a few months ago I was even questioning the existence of God and some sort of life cycle, so I relate. And the fear of going crazy has kind of stuck with me. Every once in a while I will look up the symptoms of schizophrenia to do a litlle check on myself. My therapist always says that if you are asking whether or not you are going crazy then you have your answer...you're not. Good luck everyone!

I, too, am going through something similar to what you explained. As a matter of fact, I just posted a new post about it! I've been challenging my faith in God lately, too. I've been attending church, though, and it feels great to do even that much! It's sometimes hard to think there is such a God when I feel this awful and let my panic and anxiety stop me from doing things I once loved or things I want to learn how to love! Keep you faith, though....that is something that is so strong and so important in healing. I am a firm believer in that! About your feelings of unreality and whatnot, yes, I do get that as well. Sometimes I'll start questioning life's existence and things of that nature, and I'lls tart to feel like I'm "not here." Just sort of dreamlike. This can accompany panic and anxiety from what i'm told by my therapist and in reading I've done. It's hard to NOT think we are going crazy when we feel so out of control, ya know? What I try to tell myself is that this will make me a stronger, better person in the end. And by the end, I mean the END OF PANIC AND ANXIETY. It's all about changing our thought patterns and even lifestyles. I've cut out alcohol and caffeine completely, and that in itself has made me have less frequent panic. I have more of a constant sense of anxiety and panic versus panic attacks themselves, but I have had many of them in my life. I hope you are feeling well and keep posting here....this seems like such a wonderful network. Lisa

The moment I lay down at night is the worst for me too. I have horrible insomnia, caused usually by manic episodes but made much worse by panic. I am overtaken by thoughts of fear and being alone. When the kids and the hubby are sleeping peacefully, I start freaking out about everything. The internet has become my safety net. I can read, research, and usually relax by taking my mind off my fears that lead to my panic. I spend time in chat rooms too being silly with all the other people in there who are being silly, or in the chat rooms on Yahoo that are there for people with panic and anxiety problems. It's an immediate way to talk to others with the same problems as I have. Mama

Dear Lisa: I read your post amazed. I could have written it. It describes *EXACTLY* what I am going through. I also have an all day sense of anxiety and panic rather then full blown panic attacks. The feelings of unreality you described are exactly the same. It is reasuring to know that I am not the only one. If you don't mind me asking are you taking any meds?

My name is Chrissy. I used to be on drugs pretty reguraly. Nothing real major just pot mostly. One night, I smoked out of a water bong..well, it was laced with PCP or it was PCP i have no idea. needless to say, I tripped pretty hard that night... a little after that I started having panic attacks, I was so scared.. they lasted all day long everyday. It stopped for a while, and then I started to feel like I wasnt here "dreamlike" it scares me. then, I read about it and found out I wasnt crazy and that other people feel like this. I am so relieved. The doctors told me I have to deal with it myself without medication. This message was edited by am on 10-5-03 @ 10:15 AM

Hi, Chrissy. Welcome. It's not unusual to have panic attacks with drug abuse. Feeling unreal is quite common too. PLease don't hesitate to show our site to your doctor. Our free Panic Program may help you improve your situation. All the best.

Hey guys, I'm going through some pretty hardcore derealization, panic, and depression right now myself and I'm slowly running out of answers. Have any of you tried these tapes/cd's that they offer online that supposedly rid you of panic. I'm so desperate, I'm pretty much willing to try anything. If anyone has any input I'd apprectiate it alot. Thanks, Dennis

Hi Dennis! I have heard of the tapes, but haven't tried them. One thing that has helped me is a book called "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Norman Vincent Peale. He has some other good books, too. It's been hard for me to change the way I think, but it's helping. I want it all fixed right now, but struggle is a part of healing I guess! Good luck to you!

O.K I am getting a little carried away. I came across the board tonight and this is my third post in 10 minutes. It's just that I suffered panic attacks seven years ago but remember them like yesterday. My greatest fear during these attacks was always that I was going crazy or they were symptomatic of a more dangerous mental condition. They are not. Anxiety is anxiety and nothing more and i learned this from the hours I spent researching the condition. I still suffer periodic anxiety (typically every few months or so I'll have a week of it) I have had the feelings of unreality and out of body feeling many times. And its just as scary every time. Think of it this way. You know its anxiety that's making you having these feelings of unreality because when you are relaxed or engrossed in something other than your worying thoughts you feel normal and not disconnected. I have found its all about relaxation. Relaxation is the opposite of anxiety so relaxation should always be the goal when frieking out. Once calm your weird frightening feelings disappear. Don't worry.

Hi Bella! Wow! YES! In fact, 3 years ago I had a complete crisis of faith in general and had to rebuild my spirituality from the ground up. I'm not sure why, but issues of faith always come up for me when I am having a hard time with panic. And it took me 5+ years to really, truly believe that I was NOT going crazy. Of course, I hadn't found CBT, nor had I found support groups. Once I found those, I got better pretty fast. Please know that you will eventually feel better. Have faith in that at least.

I wanted to comment about people losing their faith in God because they think he is somehow responsible for their panic and anxiety disorder. Many times the reason we are having problems in our lives is because we are trying to do our own will rather then God's will. The consequences of trying to carry out our own ideas and plans rather then waiting for God to bring forth his ideas and plans cause us to have way to much stress in our lives which then causes us to have anxiety and panic. When things don't go the way that we want them to then we get angry at God because he is not making everything work out as we want it to. But the problem is not God's doing it is ours. What we fail to remember is what man sets out to do on his own will fail but what God does will not fail. I have had a hard time learning this concept myself, but now that I've realized I have to give control over to him, my anxiety and panic is going away and I feel better now then I did before I develped this disorder.I used to say I just wish things would go back to the way they were before , but now I would never want to go back I'm so glad to be moving forward. If we look at this disorder as a opportunity to grow and become better it can change our whole outlook.

Pamela, I just posted on another thread about how I agreed with what you said there, and here I am agreeing with you on this one! I used to think that God was punishing me with this panic problem for some reason. I thought that I had really made Him mad at me and that everytime I panicked, it was Him, punishing me for something. This just added to the guilt and shame I felt and made the problem worse. I finally realized that it's not God punishing me, that this is something that I have to go thru and learn from so I can become the person that He made me to be. Struggling with this problem has had positive effects on me, I am stronger, I am more sensative to other people's problems, I enjoy the blessings of life much more, and my attitude has changed dramatically. People who don't face struggles in their lifes and try to overcome them, don't grow. We only progress and grow thru the things that we struggle with. Pamela, I would like to talk with you, since we have such similiar ideas! You can email me at [email protected] if you like!

Do you know what I find thats interesting? Once an attack and the anxiety has diminished and I find myself feeling like my normal old self.....I actually question how it is that I'm feeling so good! It truly ruins the moment. So I've come up with a new plan. When I start feeling anxious I remind myself that "10 minutes ago you were enjoying yourself and feeling fine...why don't we go back there?"

I have filed for the Disabilty Policy that I bought thru my Local IBEW Union. The Insurance company is giving me a hard time because I filed a claim before the anniversary date of my policy. I have been out of work since Labor Day weekend (Sept 4th). I have not received any money. My physicians' staff is adding to my anger, anxiety and frustration by not complying with the insurance company's requests for my medical info. It has taken me 6 weeks to get them to FAX a 1 page statement. I have FINALLY been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia after 10 years of complaining and testing that I do not feel well and have NO stamina. I hurt, ache and swell. Every Muscle hurts. I can't sleep or feel rested. I stay cranky and irritable. The whole process has me overwhelmed and exhausted. So why won't anyone cooperate? I have had 2 Anxiety attacks and had to go to emergency room. I can't breathe. Does any know what length of time is considered appropriate for a Physician to respond to a request for info on their patient. My first visit to a psychiatrist is not until Dec 8th. I feel I will surely go mad before then. HELP! Della in South Carolina

Hi Della, I worked in a family practice clinic for many years and I have dealt with people in your very similar situation. Don't be afraid to get on them about this. It is very important to you. The delay may be caused by a variety of reasons, i.e. maybe the doctor has been very busy and hasn't had a chance to deal with it yet. One of the most common problems I have seen in the past is that the doctor/staff needed more information from the patient personally i.e. info that was not readily available in the chart. When you contact them again, very politely, and calmly, (as hard as it will be or else you may not get anywhere)ask if they know when it will be ready, is there anything you can do from your end to speed up the process of completion i.e. is there any info you could provide to them? Another option is to ask to speak directly to your doctor. They may likely not be able to take your call right away but may be able to call you back by the end of their clinic day. Let them know (again calmly) what you have been going through and ask what could be done to speed up your claim. Be sure to get the name of the staff person you have been dealing with and have been giving you a hard time. It is important for doctors to how their staff have been treating their clients. Good luck with all of this. Be sure to let us know how you make out. Casey _____________________________________ The Panic Center Support Team Edited on 11/30/2004 @ 9:31:21 AM by The Support Team
