How Will My Doctor Help?

If your doctor decides that you have panic disorder she/he will likely recommend treatment. After talking about your concerns, your doctor will likely recommend medication and/or some type of psychotherapy. Your doctor will likely discuss with you the pros and cons of both kinds of treatment. If your doctor prescribes medication she/he will discuss common side effects and the importance of starting on a low dose and gradually increasing it to the full dose. If you and you doctor decide that psychotherapy is the way to go, then your doctor will likely discuss what the options for accessing psychotherapy services are in your area.

No matter what treatment you choose, your doctor will likely emphasize that it will be 3-8 weeks before you notice any improvement in your condition. Your doctor will also likely tell you that treatment will involve some commitment on your part, for example, to take your medication as prescribed and/or attend psychotherapy sessions. Your doctor will likely want to set up a follow-up appointment to check to see how things are going for you.
