How Does the Panic Diary Work?

The Panic Diary is designed to help your patients track the frequency of their panic attacks and other symptoms. Research has shown that tracking symptoms is an important part of an effective treatment plan for panic disorder and agoraphobia.

Patients with panic disorder or panic disorder and agoraphobia can use The Panic Diary to keep track of their panic attacks and other symptoms. People who have agoraphobia without panic attacks can use the Panic Diary to keep track of their daily ratings of anxiety and depression.

Users of the Panic Diary have the options of printing their results, or sending them to their doctor via email. People in a treatment program are unlikely to notice any big changes right away. It will probably take 3-8 weeks before you notice any changes. Keeping a Panic Diary is still very important.

What Steps are Involved?

There are 3 steps involved with maintaining the diary:

Step 1: Choosing a date

Once they sign up, users are brought to a monthly calendar. They then click on a date that they want to create a record for. Once they click on a date they are brought to Step 2: Recording symptoms.

Step 2: Recording panic symptoms

People record their symptoms on the electronic Panic Attack Form. Although it is not required, we also provide them with the option of recording their medication(s).

Users are asked to complete one entry for each panic attack they experience. If they have a panic-free day, it is important to record the absence of panic, and why they feel they did not have a panic attack. People who have agoraphobia without panic attacks can use The Panic Diary to keep track of their daily ratings of anxiety and depression. They just need to remember to select "I did not have a panic attack" for each day.

We realize that some people do not have 24 hour access to the Internet. Therefore, we have created a printer-friendly Panic Attack Form. Your patients can record their symptoms on the Panic Attack Form and input them into their diary at a later date.

Step 3: Reviewing results

Once people have recorded their symptoms, they are brought to their Diary Results. These results graphically illustrate the severity and frequency of their panic attacks over time, as well as the other symptoms that they experienced.

The goal of people with panic disorder is to reduce the frequency and severity of your panic attacks. As they learn to recognize their "triggers" or "cues" they will increase their ability to challenge their fear and avoidance. The goal of people who have agoraphobia without panic attacks is to start to notice how changes in their daily ratings of anxiety and depression affect their avoidance.
